Corfu is an island that can enchant anyone who visits it, as it combines natural beauty with rich history and culture. It is a destination that has been influenced by different cultures – from the Venetians to the French and the British – and this can be seen in every corner. When I first walked through Corfu’s old town, I felt like I was taking a trip back in time, to a time when the cantinas (narrow streets) were full of life and stories.

The town of Corfu, which has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, is perhaps the most characteristic expression of this cultural diversity. I wandered among the Venetian mansions, the narrow streets with laundry hanging over my head and the small squares with lively cafes.
Spianada Square, one of the largest squares in the Balkans, is the ultimate city centre, ideal for enjoying a coffee with a view of the iconic Liston.
But Corfu is not only about its architecture – it is also about its history, which is reflected in its emblematic monuments. One of the most impressive ones I visited was the Old Fortress, which dominates the city’s harbour. There I felt the power and strategic importance that the island had during the Venetian rule. The New Fortress, more modest but equally impressive, offers a breathtaking view.

I could not miss the visit to Achilleion, palace of Empress Elizabeth of Austria, the famous Sissy. Her love of Greek culture and the myth of Achilles is reflected in the statues and paintings in the palace. Walking through its gardens, I felt like I was in a setting that combined art and nature.

Beyond history and architecture, Corfu has a unique tradition. I was lucky enough to attend one of its famous philharmonic orchestras, which bring the island to life on every festive occasion.

Moreover, the cuisine of Corfu is something not to be missed. Pastitsada, sofrito and bianco are dishes that made me feel the warmth of Corfiot hospitality.
Finally, the beaches of Corfu are another reason to visit. From Paleokastritsa with its crystal clear waters to Kavos with its vibrant life, every coast of the island offers something different.

Corfu is not just a tourist resort. It is a place that lives and breathes through its history, its traditions and its natural beauty. Returning from this island, I not only took away memories but also a deeper understanding of Greek identity.
