Through lectures and discussions, we will delve into the ideas that laid the foundations for science, metaphysics and the philosophical thinking that followed. Come and join us on a journey to the beginning of the search for wisdom!

  1. What is philosophy and when it was born. Miletus and political developments. The role of the alphabet, currency and language. The passage from myth to reason. Thales, Greece and the East. Water as a principle and Thales as the first philosopher. Anaximander and infinity. The surviving passage of Anaximander.
  2. Anaximenes and the air. A first law of physics. The connection between microcosm and macrocosm. The Pythagoreans. From Ionia to Southern Italy. Religion and philosophy. The Pythagorean life. Reincarnation. Mathematics and mysticism. The achievements of the late Pythagoreans. The Pythagorean cosmological model.
  3. Heraclitus and Parmenides. Their style and writing. Critical thinking and doubt. Heraclitus, the constant flow, harmony and unity of opposites. The concepts of Judgment and Reason. The distance from the multitude and tradition. Parmenides. Sense and intellect. Being and the principle of identity. The problem posed by Parmenides in philosophy.
  4. The last pre-Socratics and the answer to Parmenides. Empedocles and Anaxagoras. The comparison and the distinction. Two cosmic powers. Leucippus and Democritus. The atoms and the vacuum. The role of experience. The creation of the world and the cosmic forces. The achievement of Democritus.

Presenter: Gerasimos Georgatos, graduate of the Philosophy Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, with postgraduate studies in Paris and extensive experience in seminars on ancient Greek and modern philosophy.
